It’s here that the gang speculate why the robots have recently scanned, but not killed Don (“like they were trying to guess my price at a supermarket,” he quips). It takes a few episodes for the Robinsons to be reunited, and by mid-season, season three Lost in Space feels much like season one Lost in Space. However, they couldn't deliver on the promise of his connection to Robot, because they too didn't consider the rules they themselves put into place, and apparently hoped the audience wouldn't either. In Will's case, Lost in Space's writers created a story centered around Will's growth spurt, which solved one puzzle. ![]() When Lost's creators asked for the trust of viewers who could smell something wasn't right, just before Walt's ignominious departure, they misspent their credibility on something that should have been evident on day one. Walt was written out of Lost because child actor Malcolm David Kelley was no longer a convincing 10-year-old, because of how much time lapsed during filming seasons (an issue that should have been considered from the start). But, ultimately, they both suffer from the same problem, and were given the same solution. Walt and Will were held up as something special in their respective universes in ways that set them apart from other characters. Although none of them appeared to form the permanent bond that Will and Robot share, it seems to be an overly simplified loophole in their programming - and, once one is aware of it, the stakes of everything surrounding Will's significance feels diminished. Each adopts the friendly humanoid form and fights to the death their mechanical comrades of mere moments earlier, on behalf of their new human saviors. Penny discovers this in the final episode, and is able to bond a fire team of loyal ARs to her cohort by helping to rescue them from wreckage. It also turns out that all is required to initiate a reprogram is to aid one of the ARs while they are in distress, even if that assistance is calculated and self-serving. SAR spikes Scarecrow through his cranial cavity and seemingly downloads the location of Sunshine Base, allowing him to set a trap for Will, using his parents as bait. ![]() Robot is capable of melding minds with Will and seeing through his eyes, and the ARs seemed networked to one another on different occasions. Much of the series' internal lore seems patchwork and leaky in terms of consistency and plot development, which creates some of the narrative frustration. ![]() The issue isn't that SAR needed to determine how this happened, it's that Lost in Space sets up an elaborate sense of personal importance surrounding a question that it would seem simple to solve with SAR's abilities and resources.
